MANILA – The Senate impeachment court rejected a petition submitted by two of its members to the Supreme Court, arguing that the filing on voting procedures for convicting Vice President Sara Duterte was fatally premature.
Atty. Reginald Tongol, spokesperson for the impeachment court, made the assertion in a statement released Thursday. The court contended that raising the question of how many votes would be needed to convict the Vice President at this stage of proceedings was procedurally improper.
The petition had sought clarification on the number of votes required to secure a conviction in the ongoing impeachment case against Duterte. However, the court's position suggests such matters should be resolved only when the proceedings reach the appropriate stage, rather than being litigated prematurely before the high court.
The impeachment court's stance reflects concerns about maintaining proper procedural order in what has become one of the most consequential political cases in recent Philippine history. The dispute over voting thresholds underscores the technical complexities surrounding Duterte's removal proceedings.
