Import curbs push up prices of potatoes, chillies and onions

Imported potatoes, dried chillies and large onions are experiencing sharp price increases, according to the Essential Food Importers' Association. The market movement reflects a tightening of supply for these staple commodities that Sri Lankan households depend on for everyday cooking.

The association's President, S. Vinayag Sundaram, attributed much of the price pressure to the suspension of dried chilli imports from India, a primary source of supply. The import restrictions have created a supply shortfall that traders say is forcing prices higher across retailers and wholesale markets.

Recent customs operations have intensified scrutiny on imported produce. Customs Spokesperson Chandan Punchihewa reported that authorities recently intercepted more than 100 containers of imported goods, though details on the contents and any enforcement actions remain unclear.

The price increases come at a time when many Sri Lankan households are managing tight budgets. Industry observers indicate the situation underscores the country's reliance on imported produce and the vulnerability of local markets to supply disruptions and policy changes affecting cross-border trade.
