In Indian jail, 362 inmates observe Navratri fasts with devotional fervor

Durg Central Jail in Chhattisgarh is witnessing an unusual display of faith during the nine-day Navratri festival, with 362 inmates engaged in devotional practices honoring the goddess. The group comprises 332 male and 30 female prisoners who have undertaken fasts of different lengths—some observing the full nine days while others have opted for shorter periods of three days.

To accommodate the religious observances, jail authorities have installed an idol of the goddess within the prison premises and established a daily worship routine. Morning and evening prayer ceremonies, known as aarti, are conducted regularly, with inmates participating in collective singing of devotional songs, accompanied by traditional instruments including drums and cymbals.

Prison administration has ensured that fasting inmates receive appropriate nutritional support. A special dietary arrangement has been implemented, providing fruits, milk, sabudana, peanuts, and sugar to those observing the fast. Such provisions enable inmates to maintain their religious commitments while receiving adequate sustenance during the festival period.

The initiative reflects efforts by prison authorities to respect inmates' religious sentiments while maintaining order and discipline within the facility. The Navratri observance has created a period of communal worship within the jail, offering inmates a structured outlet for spiritual expression during their incarceration.
