The Income Tax Department has intensified its appeal to taxpayers to file their returns before August 31, as the deadline approaches for Assessment Year 2026-27. The department is particularly focused on ensuring that non-audit taxpayers complete their submissions well ahead of the cut-off date to prevent congestion in the filing system during the final hours.
According to data released by tax authorities, more than 6.5 crore income tax returns have been successfully filed so far for AY 2026-27. This includes over 2 crore returns under ITR-3 and ITR-4 categories, which are typically filed by self-employed individuals, professionals, and small business operators.
The department's push comes as a precautionary measure to streamline the filing process and reduce technical glitches that often occur when a large number of taxpayers attempt to file simultaneously near the deadline. Officials have emphasized that early submission not only ensures a smoother experience for taxpayers but also allows the department to process returns more efficiently.
Taxpayers who fall under the category of non-audit filers are advised to visit the official income tax portal and complete their filings at the earliest. The department has also made available various resources and guidance materials to assist individuals in preparing their returns accurately and within the stipulated timeframe.
