Leaders of the INDIA bloc coalition took to the streets in Bihar on Monday to voice their concerns about the functioning of the Election Commission of India (ECI), accusing it of partisan conduct that they claim undermines democratic institutions.
The opposition alliance alleged that the poll body has been operating under undue influence, compromising its constitutional mandate to conduct free and fair elections. The demonstration, organised as an "Aakrosh March" or anger march, drew participation from multiple parties within the coalition, each voicing concerns about the integrity of the electoral process.
According to the protesting leaders, the ECI's recent decisions and directives have disproportionately favoured one political party, thereby weakening the foundational principles of Indian democracy. They contended that such institutional capture poses a threat to constitutional governance and the checks and balances essential to the Indian democratic system.
The protest underscores escalating friction between the opposition and the election regulating authority, a development that has become increasingly prominent in recent election cycles. The INDIA bloc's show of strength in Bihar, a politically significant state, signals the coalition's determination to highlight what it terms as democratic backsliding ahead of upcoming electoral contests.
The Election Commission has previously denied allegations of bias, maintaining that it operates independently and impartially in accordance with electoral law and constitutional provisions.
