India and Canada resume trade agreement negotiations with ambitious targets

India and Canada have initiated the next phase of discussions on a proposed trade agreement, officials confirmed, as both countries seek to strengthen economic ties. The talks assume significance given the explicit target set by New Delhi and Ottawa to elevate bilateral trade from current levels to $50 billion by 2030.

The renewed negotiations reflect both nations' commitment to deepening commercial cooperation across key sectors. Trade agreements between India and Canada have historically covered areas including pharmaceuticals, information technology, agricultural products, and energy resources, among others.

The $50 billion trade target represents a substantial expansion of commerce between the two nations and would position Canada among India's leading trading partners. Meeting this objective would require enhanced market access, streamlined customs procedures, and increased participation from businesses on both sides of the relationship.

Both countries have cited mutual economic benefits from a comprehensive trade framework. Officials from the commerce and external affairs ministries are expected to lead the negotiations, with rounds scheduled over the coming months to address tariff schedules, rules of origin, and other substantive trade matters.

The pursuit of a formal trade pact aligns with India's broader strategy to expand commerce with developed nations and diversify its trading relationships beyond traditional partners in Asia and Europe.
