India and Uzbekistan elevate ties to strategic partnership

India and Uzbekistan have formally elevated their diplomatic relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership following high-level engagements that yielded 16 major bilateral agreements. The upgrade marks a significant deepening of ties between the South Asian nation and the Central Asian republic, reflecting shared strategic interests and complementary economic goals.

Among the key outcomes is a landmark agreement for uranium supply from Uzbekistan to India, a development that enhances New Delhi's energy security and supports its expanding nuclear power generation capacity. The pact addresses India's long-term fuel requirements for its civilian nuclear programme and represents a major step in securing reliable supply chains from trusted partners.

Defence and security cooperation features prominently in the bilateral framework, with the two countries committing to enhanced military-to-military engagement, joint exercises, and intelligence sharing. The agreements underscore India's strategic interests in Central Asia and its focus on strengthening security partnerships in the region.
