India approves 2.12 lakh crore defence procurement package for military modernisation

India's Defence Acquisition Council has approved a substantial defence procurement package valued at ₹2.12 lakh crore, marking a significant step in the country's military modernisation efforts. The approval encompasses acquisitions across all three services—the Army, Navy and Air Force—aimed at enhancing operational readiness and strategic capabilities.

The procurement programme includes a diverse range of platforms and systems designed to address contemporary security challenges. Among the approved acquisitions are advanced drones and helicopters, along with other modern weapon systems tailored to each service's operational requirements. The multi-service approach reflects India's integrated defence strategy and focus on comprehensive military strengthening.

A notable aspect of the procurement plan is its emphasis on domestic production. Approximately 82 per cent of the total acquisition value is earmarked for purchase from Indian industry, underscoring the government's commitment to strengthening the defence industrial base and promoting self-reliance in critical defence manufacturing. The initiative is expected to generate significant economic activity and technological advancement within the domestic defence sector.

The approval comes as India continues to modernise its armed forces amid evolving regional security dynamics. The comprehensive nature of the procurement—spanning equipment, systems and platforms across all three services—indicates a holistic approach to defence preparedness and capability enhancement.
