India approves duty-free sugar imports as domestic output faces scrutiny

India has approved duty-free imports of sugar as policymakers move to manage domestic supply and pricing pressures in the coming months. The decision reflects government concerns about sugar availability in the retail market as demand remains robust across the country.

However, the Indian Sugar and Bio-Energy Manufacturers Association has pushed back against assertions of a critical shortage, arguing that domestic production capacity remains adequate. The association points to an accelerated crushing schedule for the new season, with mills expected to begin processing sugarcane 10 to 15 days ahead of the typical calendar.

The industry body contends that early processing will allow fresh supplies to reach the market sooner, potentially easing price pressures without heavy reliance on imports. Earlier starts to the crushing season have historically helped stabilize retail prices by ensuring steady supply flow through the peak consumption period.
