The Cabinet has sanctioned a defence acquisition programme worth over Rs 40,000 crore for the construction of eight next-generation stealth corvettes tailored for the Indian Navy's operational requirements. Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) and Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) will jointly execute the project, with completion targeted by 2030.

The indigenous corvettes represent a significant advancement in naval technology, incorporating stealth capabilities to enhance the Navy's surveillance and combat effectiveness across Indian waters. The project falls under the government's broader push to develop domestically-designed and manufactured defence systems, reducing dependence on foreign military hardware.

This procurement marks a substantial investment in India's shipbuilding infrastructure and defence industrial base. The involvement of two major public sector shipyards is expected to generate employment opportunities and strengthen the domestic supply chain for naval construction.

The project aligns with India's strategic objectives to modernise its maritime forces amid evolving regional security dynamics. The corvettes, once operationalised, will enhance the Navy's ability to conduct coastal defence, anti-submarine warfare, and surface combat operations across the Indian Ocean region.
