India, ASEAN to modernize trade agreement amid shifting global dynamics
India and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations have launched fresh negotiations to update their trade framework, seeking to align the 2009 agreement with evolving supply chains and economic conditions. The move reflects efforts by both sides to strengthen commercial ties in a rapidly changing regional landscape.

India and ASEAN are accelerating discussions to upgrade their trade relationship through a revised goods agreement, addressing gaps that have emerged since the original accord was signed in 2009.
The ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement, known as AITIGA, was designed to liberalize trade flows and deepen economic cooperation between India and the 10-member Southeast Asian bloc. However, developments in global trade patterns, the reconfiguration of supply chains, and shifts in the broader economic environment have created pressure to modernize the framework.
The upgrade initiative signals both India's commitment to strengthening economic partnerships in Southeast Asia and ASEAN's interest in leveraging evolving trade dynamics to benefit member nations. By revising the agreement, negotiators aim to ensure that tariff schedules, rules of origin, and other provisions reflect current realities rather than conditions from nearly two decades ago.
The negotiations come as regional economies seek to position themselves strategically amid geopolitical realignments and efforts to diversify supply chains away from traditional sources. A modernized agreement could expand opportunities in sectors ranging from manufacturing to agriculture and services.
Both India and ASEAN have indicated that updating AITIGA is a priority, with formal talks expected to yield concrete results in the coming months as stakeholders work to finalize the terms of an enhanced trade relationship.
