India, Bangladesh to discuss Ganges water-sharing pact via joint commission

India has signalled its intention to address the Ganges water-sharing agreement through the established joint river commission mechanism with Bangladesh, according to remarks by India's Foreign Secretary.

The bilateral commission, which brings together water resource experts and officials from both nations, is expected to serve as the primary platform for discussing the treaty framework governing the sharing of waters from the Ganges River.

The Ganges, one of South Asia's most crucial waterways, flows through both India and Bangladesh before emptying into the Bay of Bengal. Management of its waters carries significant implications for agriculture, hydropower generation, and freshwater supply across both nations.

Previous water-sharing agreements between India and Bangladesh have addressed the distribution of flows during different seasons. Any revision or discussion of existing pacts typically involves technical assessments of water availability, seasonal variations, and the needs of both countries.
