India bans reuse of single-use medical devices in hospitals
India's health authorities have issued a nationwide directive prohibiting hospitals and healthcare facilities from reprocessing single-use medical devices. The measure aims to protect patients from infection risks associated with device reuse.

The Directorate General of Health Services has ordered all hospitals and health centres across India to cease the practice of resterilizing and reusing single-use medical devices, according to an official directive issued this week.
The ban comes as health officials emphasize that single-use devices are not designed to be safely reprocessed, regardless of sterilization methods employed. According to the directive, reusing such devices significantly increases the risk of transmitting infections to patients, compromising patient safety standards.
Single-use medical devices are manufactured and validated for one-time use only. The materials and construction methods used in these devices can degrade or become compromised during sterilization cycles, potentially rendering them unsafe for subsequent use.
The order applies to all healthcare facilities operating under government and private sectors throughout the country. Health authorities have directed facility administrators to ensure compliance with the new guidelines to maintain infection control standards and protect vulnerable patient populations from preventable complications.
