INDIA bloc calls shutdown in Odisha over mining law, poll body row

The INDIA bloc parties in Odisha have scheduled a complete shutdown for October 8 as part of an escalating protest campaign against the state and central governments. The bandh is intended to press two primary demands: the repeal of the Mineral and Mining Development Regulation Amendment Act, 2026, and the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

The announcement came in the aftermath of demonstrations that turned confrontational near the Chief Minister's residence, where police intervened to disperse gatherings. The opposition coalition cited both the mining legislation and election administration concerns as catalysts for the planned shutdown.

The MMDR Amendment Act, 2026 has emerged as a flashpoint for opposition parties, who argue the legislation adversely affects mining regulations and environmental protections in mineral-rich Odisha. Simultaneously, opposition groups have sought the Chief Election Commissioner's removal, suggesting dissatisfaction with the conduct of electoral processes.

The bloc has called on citizens, traders, and transport operators to participate in the bandh, seeking to demonstrate public opposition to current policies. The shutdown threatens to disrupt commercial activity and public services across the eastern state if participation proves widespread.
