India bloc fracturing, Rahul Gandhi unsuitable as leader: Chouhan

Shivraj Chouhan launched a sharp critique of the opposition INDIA bloc on Tuesday, asserting that the alliance is fragmenting and rejecting Congress leader Rahul Gandhi as a credible figurehead for the coalition. The Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister's remarks reflect escalating tensions between the ruling BJP and the broader opposition front ahead of crucial state elections.

In response, Congress leaders convened to reaffirm their commitment to the alliance, emphasizing that opposition parties remain consolidated in their mission to safeguard constitutional institutions. The party characterised recent government policies as repeated assaults on constitutional values, including what party representatives described as electoral malpractices designed to maintain political dominance.

The Congress delegation stressed that despite internal variations, the INDIA bloc's fundamental purpose—protecting democratic institutions and constitutional protections—remains uncompromised. Opposition strategists framed the coalition as essential for presenting a unified alternative to current governance approaches.

Chouhan's challenge to both the alliance's coherence and Gandhi's leadership credentials underscores the intensifying political competition as India approaches critical electoral contests. The BJP's strategy appears focused on delegitimising opposition unity, while Congress aims to present the bloc as a stable democratic counterweight despite periodic disagreements on tactical matters.
