The mass arrests occurred after protesters breached police barricades set up along the route to the Election Commission headquarters. Security personnel moved in to disperse the gathering, taking the demonstrators into custody at different points during the march.
The Gandhi siblings were among those detained during the protest action. Both were later removed from a sit-in that had been staged at Akashvani Bhawan, the state-run broadcaster's office complex in central Delhi.
The march was organized by the INDIA opposition alliance to press demands with the election body. The broad coalition, which includes the Congress party and numerous regional political parties, has been actively mobilizing its cadre on various issues ahead of forthcoming electoral contests.
Police sources indicated that the detentions were made under standard protocols for unauthorized gatherings in sensitive areas of the capital. The demonstrators were released after routine procedures were completed, according to law enforcement officials.
The incident underscores the heightened political mobilization by opposition parties as they challenge the ruling government's policies and governance record across multiple platforms.
