Leaders of the Congress, CPI(M) and CPI staged a coordinated protest in Srikakulam district on Tuesday, expressing concern over the deletion of voters' names from the electoral register. The opposition alliance members burnt an effigy during the demonstration, highlighting what they characterize as a systematic erasure of migrant workers from voting lists.
The parties claim that thousands of migrant workers, who form a significant portion of the district's workforce, have been disenfranchised through the Special Intensive Revision of the electoral rolls. The process, which aims to update voter registrations and remove duplicates or deceased persons, has allegedly affected legitimate voters without proper verification.
The protesters have called for the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner, arguing that the electoral body has failed in its constitutional duty to ensure fair representation. The opposition parties have demanded a comprehensive review of the deletion process and restoration of voters' names that were removed without adequate notice or opportunity for appeal.
The incident reflects ongoing tensions over electoral management in the state, with opposition parties questioning the implementation of voter registration procedures. Election officials have not yet responded to the specific allegations raised during the protest.
