The INDIA bloc has escalated its challenge to recent Assembly poll results, submitting a formal memorandum to the President that alleges large-scale vote theft and systemic failures in the electoral process. The memorandum demands the nullification of the elections, resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner, and immediate suspension of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) in favour of returning to paper ballot systems.
The opposition alliance has also called for a comprehensive review of electoral procedures, citing concerns about the integrity of the voting and counting processes. Senior opposition figures contend that the irregularities identified warrant a complete electoral overhaul to restore public confidence in democratic institutions.
Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi has indicated that sustained pressure from the opposition alliance could potentially destabilise the current government. Gandhi's remarks suggest the bloc intends to maintain momentum on the issue through parliamentary and extra-parliamentary means, signalling a protracted confrontation over electoral credibility.
The memorandum represents an unusually direct challenge to the Election Commission's authority and reflects deepening tensions between the opposition and electoral authorities. The demand for a return to paper ballots, in particular, marks a significant departure from the established use of electronic voting systems across Indian elections.
