India braces for heavy monsoon rains, strong winds through August 31

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of significant weather disruptions across the country during the final week of August, with active monsoon conditions expected to persist through August 31. The alerts cover a broad geographic expanse, with forecasters predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated pockets across the nation on different days during the period.

Northern India, along with central, northeastern and southern regions, will experience the brunt of the monsoon system, with each area facing precipitation on varying dates. Authorities have cautioned against the accompanying hazards, including thunderstorms, lightning strikes and gusty winds that pose risks to life and property.

Wind speeds are expected to reach up to 60 kilometres per hour in some areas, potentially causing disruptions to outdoor activities and infrastructure. The meteorological department has advised residents and authorities in affected regions to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions during this period of heightened weather activity.

The extended monsoon forecast underscores the intensity of this year's southwest monsoon system, which continues to influence weather patterns across the Indian subcontinent well into the final month of summer.
