India breaks ground on first port-based e-methanol manufacturing facility

India has taken a major step towards sustainable chemical production with the laying of foundation stone for the country's inaugural port-based e-methanol plant at Kandla in Gujarat. The project, valued at ₹2,300 crore, represents a collaborative effort between Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) and Assam Petro-Chemicals Limited to establish green methanol manufacturing capabilities within the port ecosystem.

The facility's location at Kandla Port provides strategic advantages for the project, leveraging existing port infrastructure and logistics networks. E-methanol, produced from renewable sources, offers a cleaner alternative to conventional methanol production and aligns with India's broader sustainability objectives in the chemical sector.

The development will proceed through two distinct phases, allowing for phased implementation and scalability of operations. This structured approach enables the project partners to optimize operational efficiency while managing capital deployment across the implementation timeline.
