India, Canada to strengthen security ties on crime and terror

India and Canada have committed to enhancing their security partnership through increased coordination on cross-border criminal activities and counter-terrorism efforts. During their latest security review, both countries identified strengthening mechanisms to tackle transnational organised crime as a key priority, recognising the shared challenges posed by organised criminal networks operating across international borders.

The agreement also encompasses improved extradition procedures for criminal offenders, reflecting both nations' commitment to ensuring that individuals fleeing justice do not find safe haven across jurisdictions. The streamlined extradition framework is expected to facilitate faster and more efficient legal proceedings in cases involving fugitives.

The security cooperation framework covers multiple dimensions of law enforcement and intelligence sharing. Both countries acknowledged the evolving nature of terrorism and organised crime threats in the region and beyond, underscoring the need for sustained dialogue and operational coordination between their security agencies.

The bilateral security review represents a significant step in deepening institutional ties between New Delhi and Ottawa. Regular consultations and joint working groups are expected to ensure consistent progress on agreed priorities, with both nations committing to regular follow-ups to monitor implementation of enhanced security measures.
