India Cannot Predict Timeline for Sheikh Hasina's Return, Envoy Says
India's High Commissioner to Bangladesh said on Tuesday that no timeframe can be provided regarding the return of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India following civil unrest in August. The statement underscores the diplomatic complexities surrounding her potential extradition.

Dinesh Trivedi, India's High Commissioner to Bangladesh, stated that predicting when Sheikh Hasina might return to Dhaka remains impossible at present. Speaking at a discussion forum organised by a private think tank in the Bangladeshi capital, Trivedi declined to speculate on a timeline for the deposed leader's movements.
Sheikh Hasina arrived in India in early September after stepping down as Prime Minister amid widespread protests and civil disturbances in Bangladesh. Her departure marked a significant political upheaval in the neighbouring country, with interim arrangements subsequently put in place to govern the nation.
The question of Hasina's extradition or voluntary return has remained a contentious diplomatic issue between New Delhi and Dhaka. India's position, as articulated by Trivedi, suggests that any resolution to the matter cannot be rushed or subject to artificial deadlines.
The statement reflects the delicate balance India must maintain in its bilateral relations with Bangladesh while addressing security and sovereignty concerns. Both nations continue diplomatic consultations on various matters of mutual interest, though the status of the former Prime Minister remains a sensitive topic in bilateral discussions.
