India Cannot Set Timeline for Hasina Extradition: New Delhi Envoy
India's High Commissioner in Bangladesh says New Delhi cannot provide a deadline for the extradition of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, as her case remains under legal examination. The statement comes amid repeated requests from Dhaka for Hasina's return following her August 2024 flight to India.

India cannot offer any timeframe for the extradition of ousted Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi said on Saturday, reaffirming New Delhi's position that her case is being processed through established legal channels.
"Nobody can give you a timeframe," Trivedi stated at a discussion hosted by a Dhaka-based think tank, addressing Bangladesh's recurring calls for Hasina's return to face trial. The envoy emphasized that India's external affairs ministry has consistently maintained that the extradition request is undergoing examination in accordance with formal procedures.
Hashina, 79, has resided in India since fleeing Bangladesh in August 2024 following the collapse of her government amid widespread anti-government protests. Dhaka authorities have pressed New Delhi multiple times to return the former premier, who faces serious accusations in her homeland.
"The process is legal, and it is well-structured," Trivedi said, reinforcing New Delhi's stance that it is following proper protocols in handling the extradition request rather than making politically expedient decisions. India's measured approach reflects its commitment to applying bilateral legal frameworks impartially, officials have indicated.
