India charts independent course on Russia-Ukraine beyond mere advocacy

India is moving beyond conventional advocacy in its handling of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, according to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, who underscored New Delhi's multifaceted approach to the geopolitical crisis.

Jaishankar's remarks reflect India's effort to balance its long-standing relationship with Russia against international pressures and its own strategic interests. The minister highlighted the historical context of Indo-Russian ties, noting that Moscow and its Soviet predecessor have consistently supported India during critical moments in its national history.

"For us, Russia and the Soviet Union before that, was a country that stood by us in many ways when our security and territorial integrity were under threat," Jaishankar stated. He further noted that India's partnership with Russia deepened during periods when much of the international community, including major Western powers, backed military regimes in India's neighborhood.

The minister's statement signals that India intends to pursue an independent foreign policy that acknowledges historical bonds while navigating contemporary international challenges. New Delhi has consistently maintained a non-aligned posture on the Ukraine conflict, refraining from taking strong positions that would alienate either Russia or Western nations.

India's diplomatic approach has emphasized dialogue, humanitarian concerns, and respect for international law, positioning the country as a bridge between divergent geopolitical positions rather than as an advocate for any particular side.
