India's Sports Ministry has approved a contingent of 492 athletes for the Asian Games beginning next month in Japan. The delegation will be led by Olympic medal-winner Neeraj Chopra and features strong representation across multiple sports.

India clears 492-athlete squad for Asian Games in Japan

The Indian contingent comprises 265 male and 227 female athletes, with athletics forming the largest component at 73 competitors. The track-and-field team includes 35 men and 38 women headlined by javelin throw champion Neeraj Chopra, a two-time Olympic medallist. The athletics squad also features long jumper Murali Sreeshankar, distance runner Gulveer Singh, decathlete Tejaswin Shankar and 100-metre hurdler Jyothi Yarraji.

Badminton will be represented by a 20-member team featuring prominent players including P V Sindhu, Ayush Shetty and Lakshya Sen. The squad includes women's doubles pair Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly, as well as men's doubles pairing Satwik Sairaj Renkireddy and Chirag Shetty.

The boxing contingent comprises 11 athletes, including recent Commonwealth Games silver medallists. The Sports Ministry has approved the athlete roster ahead of the Games but is yet to finalise the list of support staff who will accompany the delegation to Japan.
