India clears regulatory path for ethanol fuel vehicles
India's Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has amended vehicle regulations to permit E85 and E100 fuel variants, paving the way for ethanol-based automobiles in the domestic market. The move is expected to accelerate the launch of flex-fuel vehicles running on pure ethanol or high-blend fuel options.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has issued a notification amending the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, to formally incorporate E85 and E100 fuel specifications into regulatory frameworks. The regulatory amendment removes existing barriers to the commercialization of ethanol-fueled vehicles in India, allowing manufacturers to develop and launch automobiles powered by pure ethanol or high-ethanol blend fuels rather than conventional petrol.
The move represents a significant shift in India's alternative fuel strategy, aligning with government objectives to reduce petroleum import dependency and promote biofuels derived from domestic agricultural resources. E100 vehicles run entirely on ethanol, while E85 models operate on fuel containing 85 percent ethanol blended with petrol, offering flexibility to drivers depending on fuel availability.
The regulatory amendment is expected to streamline the approval process for flex-fuel vehicle manufacturers, reducing compliance timelines for new model launches. Industry observers note the change could facilitate technology transfer and domestic production of ethanol-compatible engines, potentially expanding India's automotive sector into alternative fuel segments.
The notification comes as India accelerates its transition toward sustainable transportation solutions. Ethanol fuel production in India relies on surplus agricultural commodities, creating potential synergies between the agricultural and automotive sectors while supporting rural economies. Officials have not provided timelines for the first commercial vehicles based on the new regulatory framework.
