India climbs to 31st on global tourism competitiveness index

India's improved standing on the World Economic Forum's Travel and Tourism Development Index reflects growing recognition of its appeal as a travel destination. The country's ascent to 31st place—up from 40th in the previous ranking—places it ahead of several developed nations and underscores the sector's expanding potential for the Indian economy.

The WEF index, compiled in collaboration with Zurich Insurance Group, identifies cost-competitiveness and cultural richness as key drivers of India's advancement. The nation benefits from a highly affordable travel environment relative to global standards, coupled with centuries-old monuments, diverse landscapes, and well-distributed tourism demand across multiple regions.

Japan leads the global rankings, followed by the United States, Spain, Australia, and France. However, the WEF noted that emerging markets are displaying the strongest momentum in tourism development. Alongside India, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, Turkey, Mexico, and Brazil are experiencing significant improvements in their tourism competitiveness.

India shares company with China and Mexico among the world's top 10 nations for the number of UNESCO World Heritage cultural sites. The country's tourism infrastructure, cultural assets, and business travel facilities have undergone rapid enhancement, positioning it as an increasingly attractive destination for international visitors.
