India clinches silver in Chess Olympiad open section; women earn bronze

The Indian men's team finished with 18 points from their campaign at the Chess Olympiad, which concluded on Sunday. Despite ending level with Germany on points, the Indian squad secured the silver medal on the basis of a superior tie-break score. Germany settled for the bronze in the open section.

Uzbekistan claimed the gold medal in the open category with a commanding performance, accumulating 20 points across 11 rounds. The Uzbek team registered 10 victories and just one loss—to Germany—en route to winning the final round against Ukraine by a margin of 2.5-1.5 points.

In the women's section, China dominated proceedings to capture the gold medal with another decisive victory, defeating Vietnam 3-1. The Chinese team also amassed 20 points, finishing two points clear of second-placed Kazakhstan. India's women's team drew with Georgia to secure the bronze medal in the competition.

The tournament, held in the central Asian region, showcased strong performances from Indian chess talent across both categories, with the men's team particularly coming close to the top honour before finishing just short on the final standings.
