The commercial vessel MT On Peace sustained a direct hit from a projectile while passing through the Strait of Hormuz, according to India's Ministry of External Affairs. Of the ship's 19-member crew, 17 are Indian nationals. The attack resulted in injuries to 12 seafarers, including 11 Indians, officials confirmed.
The incident marks another security concern in one of the world's most vital shipping lanes. India's Ministry of External Affairs issued a formal statement condemning the strike, characterizing it as a threat to maritime safety and international commerce.
"We reiterate our call for an immediate cessation of such attacks in the interests of peace and stability in the region, and for ensuring the safety and security of maritime traffic and seafarers," the ministry said.
The recurring attacks on commercial shipping in the Persian Gulf region have prompted heightened concern among maritime nations dependent on the waterway. India has previously expressed alarm over incidents endangering vessels and crew in regional waters, emphasizing the need for urgent measures to protect civilian shipping and preserve freedom of navigation in international waters.
