India's government has issued a strong rebuke following statements made by a prominent United States official regarding foreign workers, saying the language used was offensive and historically inappropriate.
The remarks in question employed terminology linked to indentured labour systems of the colonial era, when workers were coerced into overseas employment under exploitative conditions. Such reference has been viewed as derogatory by New Delhi, particularly given the substantial numbers of Indian citizens working globally and contributing to their host economies.
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs conveyed its displeasure through official channels, emphasising that the characterisation undermined the dignity of millions of migrant workers and failed to acknowledge their vital economic contributions.
The incident comes amid broader discussions about how Western officials address issues related to immigration and labour mobility in their public commentary. India has consistently advocated for respectful dialogue on matters affecting its citizens abroad, while highlighting the benefits that skilled and unskilled workers bring to receiving nations.
The US State Department has not yet issued a formal response to India's complaint. The controversy underscores sensitivities surrounding the portrayal of foreign workers in political discourse, particularly when historical grievances are invoked.
