India's Ministry of Defence is weighing proposals to extend the service period for certain Agniveers hired under the military recruitment scheme, officials indicated on Tuesday. The move comes as the inaugural batch of recruits approaches the end of their four-year engagement period scheduled for November 21.
The Agnipath scheme, launched in 2022, brought in young personnel on fixed-term contracts with the possibility of permanent commission for a select few. As the first cohort nears completion of their tenure, the government is assessing options for retaining high-performing candidates through extended service arrangements, separate from the standard permanent recruitment pathway.
Selection processes for potential extensions are currently underway across the military branches, with officials confirming that detailed guidelines will be announced shortly. The decision reflects efforts to optimize force composition while managing the transition of the initial Agniveer intake.
The government has not yet disclosed the number of Agniveers eligible for extension or the terms under which extensions would be granted. Defence officials are expected to clarify these parameters in the forthcoming announcement, which will determine how many personnel from the first batch will continue military service beyond their current contracts.
