India deploys real-time fertiliser tracking system to avert shortages

India's fertiliser ministry has activated a real-time tracking mechanism designed to identify potential shortages before they impact farmers and food security. The analytical tool leverages digital infrastructure to monitor stock levels, movement patterns and supply chain anomalies across the country's fertiliser distribution network.

The new system is integrated with the Integrated Financial Management System (iFMS) and AgriStack, the government's digital agricultural platform, enabling seamless data exchange and enhanced visibility across supply chains. This integration allows officials to correlate fertiliser inventory data with farming patterns and regional demand forecasts, facilitating more efficient resource allocation.

By enabling real-time monitoring of fertiliser stocks and distribution flows, the tool is expected to curtail unauthorised diversions and market leakages that have historically plagued the sector. The system provides early warning signals when inventory levels approach critical thresholds, allowing the ministry to intervene proactively through targeted procurement or redistribution measures.

The initiative reflects the government's broader push to digitalise agricultural supply chains and strengthen the mechanisms that ensure adequate fertiliser availability for farmers during critical growing seasons. Officials indicated the platform would enhance coordination between federal and state-level administrators responsible for fertiliser distribution and monitoring.
