India and the European Union have concluded talks on a comprehensive scientific cooperation framework, marking a significant step in deepening research ties between the two entities. The negotiations, which focused on establishing mechanisms for joint scientific endeavours, have now reached their final stages.
Under the terms of the agreement, Indian research organisations and institutions will gain direct access to funding from Horizon Europe, the EU's flagship research and innovation programme. This development is expected to facilitate greater participation of Indian scientists and researchers in EU-funded projects and collaborative initiatives.
The arrangement will enable eligible Indian entities to apply for and receive grants independently, streamlining the process of accessing European research funding. This direct funding mechanism represents a substantial expansion of scientific engagement between India and the EU, removing intermediary requirements that previously hindered participation.
Once both sides complete the formal signing procedures and necessary administrative protocols, the agreement will come into force. Officials from both India and the European Union have indicated their commitment to expediting the implementation process to enable Indian organisations to benefit from the arrangement at the earliest opportunity.
The scientific partnership underscores the shared commitment of India and the EU to advance research collaboration in areas of mutual interest, including emerging technologies, climate science, and fundamental research domains.
