India-EU Free Trade Pact Expected to Take Effect in Early 2027

India's Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal has indicated that the India-EU Free Trade Agreement is poised for operationalisation by the close of 2026, with the pact expected to become effective in the opening months of 2027. The timeline reflects accelerated progress in negotiations between the two major trading blocs, which have been working towards a comprehensive bilateral trade framework. Goyal's remarks suggest that both parties are aligned on concluding the agreement within the current calendar year, paving the way for swift implementation early next year. The trade deal represents a significant step in deepening economic ties between India and the European Union, covering goods, services, and investment. Once operationalised, the agreement is expected to facilitate increased bilateral commerce and provide enhanced market access for businesses on both sides. The pact has been under negotiation for several years, with both parties viewing it as strategically important for their respective economic interests and geopolitical positioning in the Indo-Pacific region.
