India, EU iron out FTA implementation details ahead of December signing

India's Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agarwal visited Brussels last week to advance preparatory work on the India-EU free trade agreement (FTA), meeting with senior European Commission officials across multiple departments. The discussions brought together representatives from the Directorate-General for Trade and Economic Security, the Directorate-General for International Partnerships, and the Directorate-General for Taxation and Customs Union.

According to India's Commerce Ministry, the bilateral meetings concentrated on three key areas: customs cooperation frameworks, measures to facilitate trade flows, and groundwork for operationalizing the FTA following its planned signing. Officials underscored the necessity for streamlined customs procedures that balance regulatory requirements with business efficiency.

"Both sides recognised the importance of efficient, transparent, and digitally enabled customs procedures in supporting businesses, reducing transaction costs, and ensuring the smooth movement of legitimate trade," the ministry stated in its official readout of the discussions.

The India-EU trade agreement was jointly announced on January 27, marking a significant step in deepening economic ties between the two regions. The December signing represents a critical milestone, with these preparatory meetings now ensuring that operational mechanisms will be ready to facilitate commerce once the pact enters force.
