India expands Agniveer service terms; 75% eligible for two-year extension

India's Cabinet has cleared the path for Agniveers to extend their military service by an additional two years beyond their initial four-year contract, addressing concerns about career prospects in the armed forces' new recruitment model.

Under the decision, approximately 75 percent of Agniveers who do not secure permanent positions in regular service will now have the opportunity to serve for two more years. This extension addresses one of the key challenges facing the Agnipath scheme, which was introduced to bring younger recruits into the military with shorter initial terms of engagement.

The two-year extension will be offered to Agniveers based on specific performance and eligibility criteria set by the armed forces. Officials have yet to publicly detail the exact parameters that will determine which individuals qualify for the extended service, though merit-based assessments are expected to play a central role in the selection process.

The scheme, first announced in 2022, aimed to create a younger military workforce while managing personnel costs. However, the lack of clarity on permanent career pathways had raised concerns among recruits about long-term employment prospects. The Cabinet's approval of the extension mechanism represents an effort to provide more sustainable career options within the military framework.

Defense officials have indicated that further details regarding the selection process and implementation timeline will be communicated to prospective and current Agniveers through official channels.
