India expands Digi Yatra trials to seven airports for international passengers

India's Digi Yatra programme has entered a new phase with trials now underway at seven major airports to streamline the international travel experience for passengers. The initiative is being tested at Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kochi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Amritsar airports as part of preparations for a full national rollout scheduled for 2027.

The digital travel initiative aims to eliminate the need for physical documents during airport procedures, allowing passengers to move through check-in, security, and boarding using biometric authentication and facial recognition technology. The system is designed to reduce congestion at airports while enhancing security protocols through automated verification processes.

The trials across multiple airports will help identify operational challenges and refine the technology before its nationwide implementation. The selection of seven key hubs—spanning metropolitan centres and regional gateways—ensures that the testing phase captures diverse passenger volumes and airport infrastructure scenarios.

Once fully implemented, Digi Yatra is expected to position Indian airports among the world's most technologically advanced aviation terminals while improving the overall passenger journey. The 2027 deadline provides authorities with sufficient time to address technical requirements and train airport personnel across the country's aviation network.
