India expands post-service benefits for Agniveers, offers insurance and employment guarantees
India's defence ministry has unveiled a comprehensive package of financial assistance and employment opportunities for military personnel completing their four-year service under the Agnipath recruitment scheme. The initiative aims to ease the transition for Agniveers leaving active duty.

The Indian military has introduced multiple welfare provisions for Agniveers—soldiers recruited under the Agnipath scheme—upon completion of their four-year tenure, addressing concerns about their post-service prospects. Not all Agniveers opt to continue as regular soldiers after their initial contract period, prompting the government to establish support mechanisms for those transitioning to civilian life.
Key provisions include dedicated insurance coverage for departing Agniveers and preferential employment access in government and private sector positions. A substantial 50 percent reservation has been allocated for ex-Agniveers in select employment opportunities, ensuring priority consideration during recruitment processes.
The financial assistance package is designed to provide economic security during the transition period, while the employment guarantees aim to facilitate smooth integration into the broader job market. These measures represent part of the government's broader commitment to supporting military personnel beyond their service tenure.
The Agnipath scheme, introduced to restructure military recruitment, has emphasised the importance of creating viable pathways for personnel leaving the armed forces. By combining immediate financial support with long-term employment prospects, the initiative attempts to make military service under the new model more attractive to prospective recruits while ensuring adequate safeguards for departing soldiers.
