India extends Agniveer service tenure by two years, opens regular commission path

The Indian armed forces has extended the Agniveer service scheme with a new 'second tour of duty' option lasting two years, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh announced. The extension provides a structured pathway for Agniveers completing their initial tenure to continue as regular soldiers, subject to meeting prescribed selection standards. This development marks a significant modification to the short-service military engagement model introduced last year. Under the revised framework, Agniveers who successfully complete their first stint of 4 to 6 years and clear the required criteria will have the opportunity to enrol as permanent military personnel. Defence officials indicated the measure addresses concerns about job security while preserving the Agniveer scheme's primary aim of augmenting armed forces manpower with younger recruits. The two-year extension is designed to facilitate a smoother transition for performers who wish to pursue a longer military career. The armed forces has not yet disclosed the specific selection parameters or the expected number of personnel eligible for the extended service option.
