India extends anti-dumping duties on Chinese aluminium foil for five years

The Directorate General for Trade Remedies (DGTR) has recommended a five-year extension of anti-dumping duties on aluminium foil imported from China, Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia, according to an official notification issued on Tuesday.

The recommended duties on 'aluminium foil 80 micron and below' range from USD 93.53 per tonne to USD 976.99 per tonne, depending on the country of origin and exporting company. "The authority, after examining submissions made by all interested parties in the present investigation, considers it appropriate and necessary to recommend continuation of definitive duties for a period of five years," the DGTR said in its notification.

The recommendation follows a sunset review investigation initiated by major domestic producers including Hindalco Industries, LSKB Aluminium Foils, Raviraj Foils, Shree Venkateshwara Electrocast, Shyam Sel and Power Ltd, and SRF Altech Ltd. These companies argued that dumped imports have adversely affected domestic profitability and market conditions.

The Finance Ministry will now review the DGTR's recommendation before issuing a final order on the duty extension. Such anti-dumping measures are typically renewed when domestic industries demonstrate that removing the levies would lead to renewed import surges at unfairly low prices.
