India extends corporate tax audit, ITR filing deadlines by three weeks
The Income Tax Department has pushed back key corporate tax compliance deadlines by 21 days for assessment year 2026-27, providing relief to businesses and tax practitioners facing a compressed audit window.

The Central Board of Direct Taxes announced the extension on Monday, shifting the corporate income tax return filing deadline to November 21 from October 31. The submission deadline for tax audit reports has similarly been extended to October 21 from September 30.
The move addresses longstanding requests from tax professionals who cited mounting pressure from the condensed audit schedule. The compressed timeline stems from the August 31 deadline for filing income tax returns in non-audit cases, leaving limited preparation time for corporate audits.
Amit Agarwal, Senior Partner at Nangia & Co LLP, welcomed the decision, noting that the CBDT had recognised genuine difficulties faced by taxpayers and tax professionals during the current compliance cycle. Tax practitioners have argued that the additional calendar days will allow adequate time for completing both statutory audits and return filings without compromising accuracy.
The extension provides breathing room for corporations navigating complex audit procedures and documentation requirements during a typically demanding season. Industry observers expect the relief measure to facilitate smoother compliance and reduce administrative bottlenecks in tax processing.
