The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has announced an extension of the income tax return filing deadline for cases involving tax audits, moving the due date to November 21. This extension provides taxpayers subject to audit requirements with additional time to complete their filing obligations and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
In tandem with the return filing extension, the CBDT has also extended the deadline for furnishing tax audit reports to October 21, pushing back the previous deadline of September 30. The one-month extension offers taxpayers and audit practitioners additional working days to complete the detailed audit process and prepare the necessary documentation.
These extensions are intended to ease compliance pressures on businesses and individuals undergoing tax audits, allowing them sufficient time to coordinate with their chartered accountants and tax advisors. The staggered deadlines—with the audit report submission coming first—enable taxpayers to incorporate audit findings into their final tax return submissions.
The move is expected to benefit small and medium enterprises, as well as larger entities with complex audit requirements, by reducing the likelihood of delayed submissions and associated penalties for non-compliance during the extended timeline.
