India eyes nationwide ban on analogue paneer as states crack down

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is moving toward a potential nationwide ban on analogue paneer, according to FSSAI CEO Rajit Punhani. The development reflects an escalating regulatory crackdown by multiple states against the non-dairy cheese alternative, which has drawn scrutiny for not meeting traditional paneer standards.

Analogue paneer, manufactured using plant-based or other non-dairy ingredients, has become increasingly prevalent in the Indian market. Consumer advocacy groups and state food safety departments have raised concerns about labelling practices and the sale of such products without adequate consumer awareness or distinction from traditional dairy paneer.

Several states have already initiated enforcement actions against analogue paneer sales and manufacturing, signalling growing regulatory consensus on the need for stricter controls. The FSSAI's consideration of a pan-India prohibition represents a significant step toward standardizing food safety norms across the country.

The proposed ban would require clarification of paneer definitions under food safety regulations and potentially restrict the marketing and distribution of non-dairy alternatives under the paneer nomenclature.
