India Eyes Russian Pantsir-S1 System to Counter Drone Threats
India is evaluating the Pantsir-S1 air defence platform as a complementary shield for its advanced S-400 systems against emerging unmanned aerial threats. The Russian system combines cannon and missile capabilities to counter small drone attacks.

India is examining the Pantsir-S1 air defence system as a potential addition to its layered air defence architecture, particularly to address vulnerabilities in protecting advanced installations from small unmanned aerial vehicles, defence observers said.
The S-400 long-range air defence system, which India has deployed at strategic locations, may require supplementary protection against low-altitude drone incursions that fall outside its primary engagement envelope, analysts noted. The gap in defence against such smaller threats has prompted New Delhi to assess the Pantsir-S1's suitability for its operational requirements.
The Pantsir-S1, a Russian-origin short-range air defence system, combines rapid-fire cannon armament with short-range surface-to-air missiles. This dual-mode capability enables it to engage targets across multiple threat profiles, making it effective against aircraft, helicopters, and increasingly, unmanned systems operating at lower altitudes.
India has been progressively modernizing its air defence infrastructure in response to evolving regional security dynamics and technological developments in unmanned systems. The evaluation of the Pantsir-S1 reflects this broader strategy to develop comprehensive defence solutions across multiple altitude and range bands.
