India eyes tenfold boost in German trade ties over decade

India's Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has unveiled plans to dramatically expand the country's trade relationship with Germany, setting a target of €310 billion in bilateral commerce over the next decade. The initiative marks a significant scaling up of economic ties between Asia's third-largest economy and Europe's industrial powerhouse.

Achieving this ambitious objective would require annual trade growth of approximately 27.1 percent—a substantial acceleration compared to historical performance. Since 2014, Indo-German trade has expanded at a modest 3.9 percent annually, suggesting the proposed target represents a fundamental shift in the trajectory of commercial ties between the two nations.

The proposed expansion reflects India's broader strategy to strengthen economic partnerships with major developed economies amid growing geopolitical realignments. Germany, as the European Union's largest economy, offers significant opportunities in advanced manufacturing, technology, renewable energy, and industrial cooperation—sectors aligned with India's developmental priorities.

Successful execution of the trade expansion plan would require coordinated efforts from both governments to address tariff barriers, enhance supply chain connectivity, and facilitate technology transfer. The initiative also comes as India seeks to diversify its economic partnerships beyond traditional markets and reduce trade imbalances with key partners.
