India faces below-normal September rainfall as monsoon deficit widens

India's meteorological authorities are predicting weaker-than-normal rainfall during September, with precipitation expected to fall below 91 per cent of the long-period average for the month. The forecast underscores mounting concerns about the broader monsoon season, which has underperformed significantly compared to historical benchmarks.

The June-August monsoon period, which typically accounts for over 70 per cent of India's annual rainfall, has registered a deficiency of 13.8 per cent so far. This shortfall places approximately 47 per cent of the country in a rain-deficient category, potentially threatening agricultural productivity and water reserves across affected regions.

The weaker monsoon performance compounds challenges for farmers and water resource management as the agricultural season progresses. With September predictions pointing to continued below-normal conditions, agriculture-dependent states face heightened concerns about crop yields and irrigation availability heading into the final months of the monsoon cycle.
