India fast-tracks power exports to flood-ravaged Nepal

India's Power Ministry has sanctioned accelerated shipments of electricity to Nepal as the country grapples with severe flooding that has disrupted its power infrastructure and capacity. The approval comes amid urgent appeals from Kathmandu for assistance as the natural disaster has left many regions without adequate electricity supply.

The expedited export arrangement will enable Nepal to meet critical power demands during the recovery period following the devastating floods. India, which already supplies a significant portion of Nepal's electricity requirements, has moved to increase the flow of power across their shared border to ease the immediate energy crisis.

"The approval will help Nepal meet its power requirements during this difficult period and further strengthen the close and longstanding energy cooperation between India and Nepal," the Power Ministry stated. The decision underscores the strategic energy partnership between the two neighbouring nations, with India positioning itself as a reliable supplier of electricity to support Nepal's reconstruction efforts.

The flood situation has impacted Nepal's hydropower generation capacity, making imported electricity crucial for maintaining essential services across the country. The expedited exports are expected to remain in place until Nepal's own power systems are fully restored.
