India flags electoral discrepancies in Pakistan at UN General Assembly

India seized the opportunity to critique Pakistan's electoral integrity during the United Nations General Assembly, exercising its right of reply following Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's speech. In its rebuttal, the Indian delegation referenced Form 47, a critical election document that has become emblematic of alleged irregularities in Pakistan's 2024 general elections.

Form 47, used to announce election results at the constituency level, emerged as a flashpoint during Pakistan's ballot process earlier this year. The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), the major opposition party, alleged significant discrepancies between Form 45, which records votes polled at each polling station, and Form 47, which consolidates results at the constituency level.

By raising the electoral dispute on the UNGA floor, India drew attention to what it characterized as governance and democratic deficits in Pakistan. The move reflects New Delhi's strategy of using multilateral forums to highlight concerns regarding institutional functioning in neighboring Pakistan.

The 2024 Pakistani elections, which resulted in Shehbaz Sharif's coalition government, have remained contentious since the vote count, with opposition parties continuing to contest the legitimacy of the results. India's reference to these internal Pakistani grievances underscores persistent bilateral tensions between the two nations.
