India formally designates 28 strategic Ladakh sites on official map

New Delhi has taken a significant step in standardizing its official cartography by formally designating 28 strategic places and geographical features across the Union Territory of Ladakh on the Survey of India map. The move, undertaken in consultation with the Ladakh administration, includes prominent border locations that have emerged as friction points during regional tensions.

Among the 28 sites formally identified are Gogra and Hot Spring, both key strategic locations that featured prominently during the 2020 military standoff between Indian and Chinese forces along the LAC. These sites have long remained points of contention in the border region and their formal designation marks a significant development in India's official record-keeping.

According to a government statement, the initiative aims to facilitate accurate recognition of these locations while enhancing public awareness regarding the sensitive border region. By assigning standardized place and feature names on the official Survey of India map, the government seeks to streamline cartography and ensure precision in identifying critical strategic sites.

The designation of these 28 locations represents a coordinated effort between the central government and the Ladakh administration to establish clarity on the territory's geographical features and strategic importance. Officials indicated that the move will contribute to better understanding and documentation of the region's sensitive areas.
