India funds new emergency unit at Mannar District General Hospital
Construction of a state-of-the-art Accident and Emergency Unit at Mannar District General Hospital began this month, with India providing Rs. 600 million in funding support. The project marks another significant development in bilateral healthcare cooperation between Sri Lanka and India.

Work commenced on September 16 on the new emergency care facility at the northern hospital, representing a major infrastructure investment in the Mannar district's medical services. The Rs. 600 million project, funded by the Indian government, is expected to significantly enhance emergency and trauma care capacity in the region.
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake expressed gratitude to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the funding commitment, underscoring the importance of the initiative for improving healthcare accessibility in the district. The new unit is anticipated to strengthen Sri Lanka's emergency medical response capabilities and reduce patient referral pressures at larger tertiary care centers.
The facility will support the existing infrastructure at Mannar District General Hospital and is designed to handle a range of acute medical and surgical emergencies. Indian-funded healthcare projects have become an increasingly visible component of development cooperation between the two nations in recent years.
